Utica and Starved Rock Park
Utica, Illinois or as it is properly named, the Village of North Utica is best known as the "Gateway to Starved Rock". Over a million visitors a year turn south off of I-80 onto Rt. 178 and visit the most popular Park in the State of Illinois. Located only 3 miles east from the intersection of I-80 and I-39, Utica is well placed for both tourism and commerce. To the south lies the Illinois River where French explorers established the first European settlement in middle America and today offers great opportunities for both recreation and transportation.
Today's village had its start in the 1830's with the building of the Illinois-Michigan Canal which connected Lake Michigan and the Mississippi River and opened up the path to the Gulf of Mexico. The National Heritage Corridor offers hiking and biking as well as fishing along the restored Canal and its Tow Path. In the fall Utica celebrates "Burgoo" a festival centered around a famous pioneer stew, which attracts a large crowd from all over northern Illinois. Utica is home to Grizzly Jack's Grand Bear Resort located on the south side of the river which features Illinois' first indoor water park.
The most popular state park in Illinois lies just across the Illinois River from Utica, Starved Rock. This huge park is known for its towering St. Peter Sandstone bluffs and canyons with miles of scenic trails. The home of woodland Indians for thousands of years, the park derives its name from a legendary confrontation between two rival Indian tribes in which one starved the other out on top of the large 125 foot sandstone butte since known as "Starved Rock". The Lodge was built in the 1930"s and was added to and updated recently and features a popular dining room and indoor pool.
Utica welcomes its many visitors with fine restaurants, taverns, and wineries. Well designed residential subdivisions, nearby golf courses, recreation, and handy highways for commuting combine to make Utica a great place to call home.
